SailSimXL - sailing simulation for iPad

SailSimXL v3.0.3 - released 10th May 2011

SailSimXL Version 3.0.3 is the iPad ONLY stream of SailSim that includes 'Gravity Wind' for teaching in addition to the standard SailSim ability to model your own boat! We have incorporated the SailPowerCalc model developed by Mikko Brummer at WB-Sails.fi to allow your boat rig spec to be used to calculate the forces for sail drive, heel, lift and drag and to reasonably accurately make SailSim behave like your boat. As we can now model boat speed, we can further enhance SailSim.
Knowing boat speed, and adding wind speed, we can now model true and apparent wind effects - true wind shown by the blue arrows as before, but apparent wind now shown by the windex atop the mast. One of the most difficult concepts I have found in teaching is real and apparent wind. With SailSim now, you can demonstrate the effects and show why changes in boat speed require changes of sail trim.

New features in V3.0.3 include:

o Gravity Wind - so you can stand up in front of your class to demo many aspects
o Physics model based on SailPowerCalc by Mikko Brummer at WB-Sails.fi (sail aerodynamics experts - great techy website!!)
o Enter you real boat data, LWL, P,E, I, J, BAS, LP
o Tiller and wheel steering (as well as the old 'turn the iPhone' method with 3GS)
o Reefing
o Wind Speed control (slide for fine adjust, tap for gross adjust)
o Windex
o Boat Speed
o Heel angle
o Leeway
o Apparent Wind Angle in addition to True Wind Angle
Here is some information on the original iPhone SailSim App....

SailSim v2.0.1 - released 18th September 2009

** NEWSFLASH ** SailSim v 3.0.2 uploaded to iTunes - Expecting approval from Apple 15th October. This will be a FREE UPGRADE to ALL SAILSIM CUSTOMERS ** END **

SailSim is dinghy/yacht sailing simulator that can be used as a learning and teaching aid for sailing.

SimSail works best with the iPhone 3GS but will also work with any iPhone or iPod touch. With an iPhone 3GS your phone becomes a virtual dinghy that you can steer as you would a real dinghy. The sails will automatically adjust to the correct position for the point of sail.

NB - Please allow SailSim to access your current position - this enables the inbuilt compass and allows SailSim to know it's orientation.

iPhone 3GS - with this hardware, your iPhone turns into a sailing boat. You can set the wind direction and then see how changes in boat heading effect the set of the sails, centerboard and boat speed. As you turn the iPhone (boat) the wind direction stays constant relative to the boat and the sails adjust and change shape as they would do in real life. This can be used to demonstrate key principles of sailing to students. You can override the set wind direction with a touch of the screen as explained below. To set the wind direction, press the i button, point the iPhone into wind, hold it there and press 'Done'.

iPhone 3G/2G/iPod Touch - as this hardware does not have a compass, you have to manually tell the SailSim where the wind is blowing from by touching the screen. Using the mast as the center point, touch the screen around the boat to set the wind direction. The wind indicators will show you where the wind is blowing from.

SailSim shows you:
  • Boat Heading
  • Centerboard (Daggerboard) position
  • Boat speed for each sail angle
  • Boat tack
  • Point of sail
  • Wind direction - as compass direction and arrows
  • Relative wind position (as you would see on an instrument)
  • Transom View - showing sail set from the stern, heel angle and centerboard depth
  • Full manual control - in full manual mode, you control the sail set and the see how the boat responds
  • Cruiser mode - change the model to more accurately represent a cruiser
  • some surprises
We would lie to thank all the users for their valuable feed back. Version 2.0 will be a free upgrade to v1.0 customers and will be available in early September 2009, as soon as approved by Apple.

SailSim - sailing simulation

SailSim v3.0.2 - released 14th October 2009

SailSim Version 3.0.2 adds some interesting functionality, most notable is the ability to model your own boat! We have incorporated the SailPowerCalc model developed by Mikko Brummer at WB-Sails.fi to allow your boat rig spec to be used to calculate the forces for sail drive, heel, lift and drag and to reasonably accurately make SailSim behave like your boat. Some feedback we received about Version 1.0 was that it was 'pretty basic', we now feel that in just three short months we have developed SailSim to have a full gamut of features and functions useful to sailing tuition.

NavStation

NavStation is a utility to aid boat navigators. It uses the iPhone 3G's in-built GPS to fix a position and then displays this in three common formats - Decimal Degrees (d), Degrees + Decimal Minutes (D m) and Degrees + Minutes + Decimal Seconds (D M s). This allows for very simple plotting of positions on paper charts.

Nav Station also shows Course-Over-Ground (COG) in ∞(T), Speed-Over-Ground in kts as well as providing the time stamp of the latest fix.

GPS status is provided if off, acquiring a fix or fix accuracy strays outside 50 meters.

It offers both a day mode and a night mode for navigators wishing to preserve their night vision. Modes are switched by swiping the screen horizontally.

Battery life of the iPhone is also maximized by allowing for auto shutdown of the GPS hardware between fixes.

GPS hardware can also be manually toggled by swiping vertically.
