SailSim v3.0.2 - released 14th October 2009
SailSim Version 3.0.2 adds some interesting functionality, most notable is the ability to model your own boat! We have incorporated the SailPowerCalc model developed by Mikko Brummer at WB-Sails.fi to allow your boat rig spec to be used to calculate the forces for sail drive, heel, lift and drag and to reasonably accurately make SailSim behave like your boat. As we can now model boat speed, we can further enhance SailSim.
Knowing boat speed, and adding wind speed, we can now model true and apparent wind effects - true wind shown by the blue arrows as before, but apparent wind now shown by the windex atop the mast. One of the most difficult concepts I have found in teaching is real and apparent wind. With SailSim now, you can demonstrate the effects and show why changes in boat speed require changes of sail trim.
New features in V3 include:
o New physics model based on SailPowerCalc by Mikko Brummer at WB-Sails.fi (sail aerodynamics experts - great techy website!!)
o Enter you real boat data, LWL, P,E, I, J, BAS, LP
o Tiller and wheel steering (as well as the old 'turn the iPhone' method with 3GS)
o Reefing
o Wind Speed control (slide for fine adjust, tap for gross adjust)
o Windex
o Boat Speed
o Heel angle
o Leeway
o Apparent Wind Angle in addition to True Wind Angle
Some feedback we received about Version 1.0 was that it was 'pretty basic', we now feel that in just three short months we have developed SailSim to have a full gamut of features and functions useful to sailing tuition.
